The Beginning of Wisdom

by Ricardo

Proverbs 9:10
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,
And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

Application:

This verse establishes a foundational principle: reverence for God forms the basis for all genuine understanding.

True wisdom cannot exist apart from knowledge of God—all other learning proves hollow without this theological anchor.(1) The “fear” here encompasses multiple dimensions. It combines terror, respect, and awe—essentially, a continual awareness that God observes and evaluates everything we think, say, and do.(1) Developing this fear requires recognizing God’s power, might, beauty, and brilliance, resulting in deep reverence and sincere commitment to obey Him.(1)

Importantly, the “beginning” here doesn’t indicate a starting point one moves beyond; rather, fear of the Lord remains the origin and fountainhead for all wisdom throughout one’s life.(2) Attempting to gain wisdom while ignoring God proves impossible because God Himself is wisdom’s source.(1) When we recognize God’s true nature and respond in worship, we position ourselves to gain wisdom—which is fundamentally seeing life from God’s perspective and responding accordingly.(1)

Initially, fear of the Lord may feel overwhelming, but once embraced healthily, it produces peace and knowledge of holy things through submission to and love for God.(3) This fear produces tangible results throughout life: it prolongs life, creates confidence, forms the heart of wisdom, turns one from evil, and proves more valuable than prosperity.(2)
