2 Samuel 7:22
Therefore You are great, O Lord God. For there is none like You, nor is there any God besides You, according to all that we have heard with our ears.
Application:
David conveys profound awe at Yahweh’s gracious promises and expresses deep gratitude. Compare 1 Chr 17:16–27.*
As the angel announced to Mary, he is “the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of his father David” (Luke 1:32). “He will reign forever and ever” (Rev 11:15). When Jesus returns in glory to rule his millennial kingdom, He will assume his place and govern from David’s throne in Jerusalem. Afterward, he will reign eternally as King of kings and Lord of lords.
In 2 Samuel 7:17–29, Nathan conveyed these details to David, and the king felt deeply moved. He offered a prayer of praise and humble worship, acknowledging his own unworthiness. He asked God, “Who am I … that you have brought me this far?” (7:18). If this does not reflect your own heart, you may not yet grasp the depth of your sin or the generous grace and kindness of God. David also honored the Lord for performing great deeds for him, for Israel, and for coming generations (7:19–24).
Finally, David asked that God would carry out his promise (7:25–29). In this closing section of his plea, we are reminded that when uncertainty arises in prayer, we should request God to honor his commitments, since “if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us” (1 John 5:14). Like David, then, pray that the promises God established in eternity become real within your own history.
