Could Christians appropriately observe Halloween?
Does it serve merely as entertainment?
Welcome to my Blog!
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Could we justify being unfaithful to God simply for a fleeting pleasure or to revel in darkness and evil? While interpretations of evil may vary, it’s important to remember that evil is anything that opposes God, His Word, and His holiness.
Observation (What the Word of God Says?)
Halloween is a pagan observance treated as entertainment through themes of death, darkness, evil, terror, deception, masks, and concealment of one’s true identity. I have reviewed the history of this holiday and invite readers to conduct their own research to decide whether it is beneficial or harmful.
Click “this link” for an article detailing the origins of this pagan festival. This blog does not intend to instruct you on the origins or risks of engaging with the occult. I might compose a book on this topic.
This blog seeks to expose darkness and direct readers toward Jesus Christ.
And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them.
Ephesians 5:11
I pray that readers recognize what Jesus and the Holy Spirit of God convey about celebrating darkness and evil when it is masked as good. Our adversary, the devil, a liar from the start, tends to obscure the boundary between evil and good.
As adults, we enjoy ourselves by adopting identities that differ from our own. As children, we add candy to make the experience appealing. The spiritual adversaries of God aim to draw children into shifting a generation.
Let’s look to the Word of God and consider whether the Holy Spirit might guide us toward the truth of God’s Word and how we may serve Him in Spirit and Truth. We might reflect on several verses that suggest how we should conduct ourselves as children of God.
A Jealous God
“(for you shall worship no other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God),”
Exodus 34:14
Two masters?
“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other…”
Matthew 6:24
Be separate!
“Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever? And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said:
“I will dwell in them
And walk among them.
I will be their God,
And they shall be My people.”Therefore
“Come out from among them
And be separate, says the Lord.
Do not touch what is unclean,
And I will receive you.”
2 Corinthians 6:14-17
Interpretation (What does it mean?)
A Jealous God
“(for you shall worship no other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God),”
Exodus 34:14
Christianity is not a religion; it is a relationship with our loving Creator, the Lord Jesus Christ! We are regarded as the Bride of Christ. Religions often establish rules by men to please God. In Christianity, God reaches down to humans to save them through grace and the blood of Christ shed at the cross. Let us move away from religions that honor God only on Sundays, leaving the rest of the week for whatever arises—even the celebration of darkness and evil. God is a jealous God, and even His name is described as jealous in the scripture above. God desires our hearts every day, not merely on Sundays, Easter, or Christmas.
As a husband, I feel jealousy when another man approaches my wife or attempts to court her. Imagine she asks me to allow a single annual date with someone else, lasting just one night. Even one night of infidelity would end our relationship permanently, and our shared bond as a couple would be lost.
Consider, then, how God feels if His bride wants to fool around!
Should we want to fool around and celebrate darkness?
Two Masters?
“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other…”
Matthew 6:24
When God invites us to follow Jesus, He becomes our loving Guide; we’re gladly devoted to Him because He’s our Savior and our Lord. Baptism is a beautiful picture of dying and rising—stepping into fresh life just like Jesus demonstrated. With Him leading us, the old fades away; we become brand-new people who joyfully follow His ways. Why choose any other path or cheer for what hurts us? We’re encouraged to keep the devil at a distance.
“nor give place to the devil.”
Ephesians 4:27
Be Seperate!
Do not be yoked with unbelievers.
Avoid being tied to those who don’t share your faith. This idea is often used for couples, but it also applies to friends and business partners. If a friendship with someone who isn’t a Christian makes you stumble, celebrate darkness, or dishonor God and His Word, it might be best to step back. Jesus promised a wonderful reward when we lose, or let go of relationships for His sake (read Mark 10:29–30).
What connection exists between righteousness and lawlessness?
According to God’s Word, we are one or the other. We cannot hold Christ’s righteousness today and discard it tomorrow like a garment to celebrate darkness, evil, and wickedness; it does not function that way. Our enemy, the devil, uses deception to create “gray areas” in our walk—just as he misled Eve with “…has God really said…?”
What communion has light with darkness?
According to what our Lord claimed, we are meant to be the world’s light (read Matthew 5:14). How can sinners be saved if we, the light of the world, fail to illuminate the darkness?
And what accord has Christ with Belial?
Belial here represents the devil. If Christ is our Master, did He make a pact with the devil so that we can indulge in Halloween and revel in evil? Absolutely not! Therefore, if Christ resides within us (if we are Born-Again Christians, He does), should we instruct Christ to depart while we invite Belial into our lives?
What agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God.
As born-again Christians, we are the temple of God. Since we are God’s, the Spirit of Christ resides within us, guiding us toward righteousness and away from sin. Without the presence of Christ’s Spirit, we are not truly His; we have been deceived, leading us to embrace and celebrate darkness.
“But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.”
Romans 8:9
Come out from among them!
The Word of God now commands us to sever any group, relationship, or religion that compromises with or ignores sin, even when dealing with the occult or even getting close to it. God commands us not to touch (handle) unclean things. Some religions claim to be godly and talk about holiness, but do they actually practice it?
But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!
2 Timothy 3:1-5
Application (What does it mean to me?)
Is it okay for Christians to celebrate Halloween?
The answer is a resounding NO!
When we claim to be God’s and find pleasure in associating with darkness, we must introspect and examine ourselves.
“Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you are disqualified.”
2 Corinthians 13:5
If Jesus Christ resides within us, we should not commune with darkness. Conversely, if we are disqualified from Jesus’ presence, we will succumb to darkness and find pleasure in it. Our prayers will become ineffective if we honor darkness, even for a single day.
I earnestly hope that if even a single reader repents, ceases to worship the darkness, and seeks guidance from the Word of God, my efforts in writing this blog will not have been in vain. If you have children, buy candy and take them to church service during Halloween. If no service available, read the Bible to them that night.
