John 3:20-21
For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.”
Application:
Those who prefer darkness over the light, so they can try (in vain) to hide their sinful deeds (3:19–20), will face eternal judgment for rejecting God’s gift. Those who accept the truth and live by it come into the light, showing that God has done their good works (3:21). Unbelievers are responsible for their evil deeds, but believers know that God receives the glory for their good works. Nicodemus was being challenged to step out of the darkness and into the light (see 3:1–2).*
This verse suggests that those involved in evil are drawn to darkness, avoiding the light to keep their deeds hidden. The darkness-and-light metaphor captures the internal struggle many experience. Fear of exposure often leads people to shy away from truth and accountability.
Evil can take many forms, from small dishonesties to major moral failures. According to scripture, these actions create distance from the light. Recognizing one’s shortcomings is key to personal growth and honesty. However, the temptation to stay hidden in darkness remains strong because people often fear the judgment that could come with revealing their true selves.
On the other hand, the passage emphasizes the virtues of seeking the light, which in this context is embodied by the Lord Jesus Christ. Those who embrace Jesus, His truth, and character step into the light, making their deeds visible. This transparency not only promotes personal transformation but also encourages a supportive community (Romans 12). Living in the light fosters a cycle of reflection; as we reveal our actions, we create opportunities for others to do the same, boosting collective physical and spiritual growth.
