God’s Enduring Word

1 Peter 1:24-25
because “All flesh is as grass,  And all the glory of man as the flower of the grass. The grass withers, And its flower falls away, But the word of the Lord endures forever.” Now this is the word which by the gospel was preached to you.

Application:

Peter contrasts the permanence of new life given by God with mere mortal life by invoking a quotation from Isaiah.(1) The passage establishes a fundamental opposition: human life originates from perishable seed and possesses only temporary glory, whereas believers have been generated by God’s imperishable word, which endures eternally.(1)

This contrast carries profound theological weight for Peter’s original audience. Even the greatest glories of humanity—including the power of the Roman Empire that dominated the world—fade into history, yet the gospel of Jesus Christ continues to flourish far beyond those former boundaries.(1) For Christians facing persecution and suffering, this passage redirects their perspective toward ultimate realities.

The new birth given by God through faith in Christ’s covenant is generated from the imperishable seed of God’s word, which produces eternal life.(1) This love commanded between believers results from obeying the truth—responding to the gospel—and is made possible by the spiritual energy of the new life God generates through his eternal word.(1) The practical implication is significant: within our temporary earthly existence, we can participate in eternity’s light by abiding in and obeying God’s Word through loving other Christians, rejecting sin, trusting God through trials, and exercising self-control—practices that characterize a life shaped by the eternal.(2)

Peter points out that the abiding word of the Lord Isaiah describes is the very word that has been preached to his readers.(1) By quoting Isaiah 40:6–8, Peter contrasts the assured and lasting nature of God’s message of redemption with the temporary suffering of his people.(3)
