Witnesses

Isaiah 43:11-12
I, even I, am the Lord,
And besides Me there is no savior.
I have declared and saved,
I have proclaimed,
And there was no foreign god among you;
Therefore you are My witnesses,”
Says the Lord, “that I am God.

Application:

In Isaiah 43:8–13, the Lord returns to a theme we see repeatedly in Isaiah—God’s ability to know the future because he is the one true God. His call for witnesses evokes the imagery of a courtroom (43:9–10).*

He called on the nations to testify about their gods’ ability to declare former things (43:9). Could their idols predict the future? Of course not. But Israel, his servant, was also called to testify; his people were also to function as witnesses (43:10, 12). They could truly say that the Lord—and not some foreign god—had alone … saved (43:12).*

That’s because no god was formed before me, and there will be none after me (43:10). Israel knew this, and their very existence proved God’s declaration. God is the only Savior—for Israel and for the world: Besides [him], there is no Savior (43:11). To look anywhere else for salvation is to look in vain.*

Israel’s existence and perseverance prove that God exists and that He is the only true God, the only Savior. This tiny nation should have been wiped off the map long ago if God hadn’t kept an eye on it (Psalm 121:4), as the apple of His eye (Deuteronomy 32:10).^
