Psalm 62:1
To the Chief Musician. To Jeduthun. A Psalm of David.
Truly my soul silently waits for God;
From Him comes my salvation.
Application:
Psalm 62. In this psalm of confidence (expressing faith in God), the psalmist trusts that God will preserve him in distress. He begins by expressing his confidence in God, whom he describes as his rock and salvation (vv. 1–2). He then addresses his enemies and describes their wickedness (vv. 3–4) before reiterating his trust in God (vv. 5–7). He encourages the congregation to put their trust in God as well (v. 8), warning them not to trust in people or in riches (vv. 9–10). The psalmist concludes by expressing confidence in God, citing God’s promises (vv. 11–12).^
Given what he faced, David confesses that his sole focus was on the God who saved him. Only such an undistracted, divine focus could give him rest, for God alone provides David with a stronghold—a sure defense against those who attacked him.*
In Psalm 62:3–4, David marvels at his enemies’ attempt to oppose him, given his confidence in God. Did they really think that the king who had God as his stronghold would be as easy to topple as a tottering fence? (62:3). They were wicked men who only wanted to bring [David] down from his throne. Outwardly they bless, but they curse inwardly (62:4). The righteous God would take note of such duplicitous scheming against his anointed king.*
In Psalm 62:5–8, David repeats the confident words he began the psalm with (62:1–2). He exhorts his soul that God alone is his defense and security. With God as his hope, David could not be shaken (62:5–6). David’s kingdom was dependent on God. Without God’s protective covering, David would have no salvation or glory (62:7). Therefore, he encourages fellow saints to pour out [their] hearts before him, as he himself did. Believers have every reason to trust God as their ever-present refuge (62:8).*
