The Lord’s Goodness to the Faithful

Psalm 138:2
I will worship toward Your holy temple,
And praise Your name
For Your lovingkindness and Your truth;
For You have magnified Your word above all Your name.

Application:

David vows to praise God wholeheartedly because His love and truth are constant (138:1–2). The Lord has exalted Himself by answering David’s prayer (138:2–3). As a result, Israel’s king desires all the kings on earth to thank God and sing of His glory (138:4–5).*

He gives attention to the humble but rejects the proud—those who believe they can live independently of Him (138:6; see Jas 4:6). Believers should not be ashamed to publicly praise God before everyone, whether great or small. In Psalm 5:7, David praises God for his faithful love, his “hesed”the Hebrew word for God’s loyal affection for those under his covenant. It was because of this love that David was able to enter the Lord’s presence to worship him.*

David recognizes the unique calling of God on his life and the mission he has been given. The Lord had promised to establish a royal dynasty for David, through which the Messiah would come and reign forever (see 2 Sam 7:11–16). God’s covenantal loyalty motivated David to worship.*

When we receive Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, obey Him, and put away our idols before Him, His “Hesed” now falls on us who walk by the Spirit rather than the flesh (Romans 8:14-17).
