Citizens of Heaven

by Ricardo

Philippians 3:20
For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,

Application:

Paul says, with tears, that many live as enemies of the cross of Christ (3:18). They lead lives focused on physical gratification and self-centeredness. He notes that their glory is in their shame. They shamefully praise themselves instead of praising the Lord. They fixate on earthly things (3:19) rather than pursuing Christ.

He reminds the Philippian believers that our citizenship is in heaven, and we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ (3:20). He did not want their earthly experience to overshadow the reality of their heavenly citizenship.

They should look forward to the return of Jesus Christ, who will transform our humble bodies into the likeness of his glorious body, by the power that enables him to subject everything to himself (3:21). We need to focus on the returning King and his kingdom, not on this world and its lesser kingdoms.

As written in Romans 8:5-8, if we have [our] minds set on the things of the flesh, we will live according to the flesh (8:5). Conversely, if we set our minds on the things of the Spirit, we will live according to the Spirit (8:5). If our minds are focused on the wrong things, our feet will automatically go the wrong way.
