If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”

Application: 

Jesus follows this story with an invitation to his disciples to seek God in prayer with boldness. We are not to sit back and wait for things to happen. Jesus calls us to ask … seek … knock in prayer (11:9), and his followers can expect a positive response from the Father if they come to him boldly (11:10). 

Human fathers, though sinful, intuitively give food to their children rather than something that will harm them (11:11-12). How much more, then, will our perfect, holy, and righteous heavenly Father discriminate and give good gifts to his children? 

The best heavenly gift that God gives to those who ask is the Holy Spirit (11:13), who in the new covenant delivers God’s will to his children. Thus, the Holy Spirit is available to operate on God’s behalf through our prayers for our benefit and through us for the benefit of others.
