Confess the Lord Jesus

Romans 10:9-10
that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Application:

The entire book of Romans, and arguably the Bible, can be summarized as follows: If you confess with your mouth, “the Lord Jesus,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. The term “confess” means “agree, or say the same thing as.” You must agree with God regarding Jesus’s identity, acknowledging that he is the eternal Son of God.*

The focus of this passage is not primarily on establishing the conditions for justification but on establishing the conditions for deliverance from temporal wrath (see Romans 1:18, 24, 26, 28), the consequences of sin (i.e., salvation), and the divine help available to all who are justified through faith in Christ. When a person believes, he receives justification. However, to gain deliverance from temporal wrath, a believer must confess or publicly acknowledge the lordship of Jesus Christ and call on Him for divine assistance.*

This explains why “confess” and “believe” are flipped in Romans 10:9–10. When a person believes, he receives God’s righteousness (i.e., he is born again). However, when he publicly acknowledges his identification with Christ, he receives temporal divine intervention (i.e., deliverance; see Matt 10:32–33).*

As we read in Matthew 10:32-33, there are no such things as “Secret Christians.” We do not keep our Christianity to ourselves.
