Be Doers of the Word, Not Just Hearers

James 1:21
Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.

Application:

If you are saved and sanctified by the Word of God, how should you approach it? Be quick to listen to God’s thoughts on a matter, slow to speak your own point of view, and slow to anger (1:19), especially if you disagree with what God has to say compared to your own human perspective. God’s Word will confront you, but getting angry with Him will not accomplish His righteous plan for your life (1:20).*

Instead, set aside moral filth and evil by confessing and repenting of your sins, and humbly accept the implanted word. Through it, God has implanted a new nature in you. You have everything necessary for spiritual growth, but you must receive it and humbly submit to its authority so it can save you—that is, deliver and transform you.*

Without action, there can be no spiritual transformation. Therefore, we should be doers of the word and not just hearers (1:22). You can read the Bible and listen to sermons all day without any impact. But to be a hearer and not a doer is like someone looking at his own face in a mirror only to walk away and immediately forget what he looks like (1:23–24). A mirror reveals reality. It exposes what you look like, but it can’t change you. It won’t comb your hair or brush your teeth. Looking in a mirror is a call to action.*

Millions of people will miss heaven by 18 inches, the distance from your brain to your heart. Mental knowledge of the scriptures will not save us. Only when we humbly allow the Word to transform our hearts and submit in total surrender to the Holy Spirit’s leading will we reap the blessings God has promised to those who love Him and obey His Word. God has promised that we will find Him when we seek Him with all our heart (Jeremiah 29:11), not with mental knowledge.
