Philippians 2:9-11
Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Application:
A servant of Jesus thinks about true greatness because that’s what Jesus did. He understood true greatness, so he could serve. What was true greatness for him? Divine exaltation: God highly exalted him and gave him the name above every name. False greatness is human exaltation. People will lift you up, but they might also bring you down. Jesus sought more than people’s praise; he lived for divine recognition.*
2:10–11 When you aim to please people rather than glorify God, you might get some applause for a while, and that becomes your reward. Sadly, though, you won’t receive God’s approval and exaltation. Some divine exaltation happens in this life, but most is reserved for eternity. So, if you want to be great, seize every chance you get to serve others to God’s glory alone.*
Jesus could sacrificially serve humanity because he knew that one day every tongue would confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father (2:11). All of life is to be the ultimate acknowledgment of Jesus Christ’s comprehensive kingdom rule. This can now be done voluntarily, but someday, all will do it mandatorily.*
The Apostle Peter wrote that God does not wish anyone to perish and be lost forever in the lake of fire (2 Peter 3:9 ESV). He is patient with us, giving us time to repent and turn to Christ. Jesus Christ is a type of the Ark that God sent before the future waters of judgment fall on unrepentant mankind, especially those who know God but do not glorify Him as God. (Romans 1:18-23).
Receive, trust, and obey the Lord Jesus Christ today, while He may still be found (Isaiah 55:6).
