Sanctification

Philippians 1:6:
being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ;

Application:

Paul was devoted to joyfully praying for the Philippian believers because of their shared mission—their partnership in the gospel from the first day (1:5). He was supremely confident that their spiritual and material investment in him would result in God’s continued work of sanctification in their lives. He thus assures them: “He who started a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus” (1:6).^

People often start projects with enthusiasm, but their zeal fades, causing the work to fizzle. However, God is different. He never starts a project and doesn’t finish it. When he begins a good work in a believer’s heart, it’s as good as done.^

At the time of our salvation, God begins His work in us. We are made alive in Christ—regenerated, made new (2 Corinthians 5:17). Then, through an ongoing, lifelong process called sanctification, God completes His work in us. Paul referred to the process when he said, “He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.” Spiritual growth ought to continue in steadfast believers until the day Jesus Christ returns (2 Peter 3:18; 1 Thessalonians 5:23).*

The church does not make a “Saint.” God calls, equips, and prepares a person for His service and His glory! The person is therefore set apart from the world system to do God’s will. This is what a saint is, a person set apart for the service of the Lord!
