Praise the Lord

Psalm 68:4-5
Sing to God, sing praises to His name;
Extol Him who rides on the clouds,
By His name Yah,
And rejoice before Him.

A father of the fatherless, a defender of widows,
Is God in His holy habitation.

Application:

In Psalm 68, David notes what happens when God arises. When the sovereign Lord acts, his enemies scatter (68:1). Like smoke, they are blown away; like wax, they melt (68:2). However, these same actions lead the righteous to rejoice. When God carries out justice on the earth, his people celebrate (68:3).

Verse 68:4-6 addresses the people, encouraging them to praise God who rises upon the clouds. God’s worthiness of worship is highlighted by His advocacy for the oppressed, including orphans, widows, and those in need. In contrast, verse 68:6 illustrates God’s judgment against the rebellious.

In Psalm 66:1-4, the psalmist calls on all people of the earth to praise God in song because of His greatness (66:1-2). Our worship should reflect the nature of the one we worship. A great God deserves great praise. The psalmist foretells a day when the whole earth will worship [God] (66:4). This is indeed true (see Phil 2:10-11).

The psalmist recounts the wonders of God, sovereignly displayed when He turned the sea into dry land for His people (66:5-6)—both at the Red Sea during the Exodus (see Exod 14:15-31) and at the Jordan River when they entered the Promised Land (see Josh 3:1-17).

Those who are rebellious—like Pharaoh, who spurned God’s commands—should not exalt themselves (66:7). Just as God supernaturally used the waters to deliver His people, He also employed them to defeat Pharaoh’s army. All people should praise the Lord because He will preserve His own (66:8-9).
