1 Thessalonians 5:11
Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing.
Application:
Paul continues his discussion of the Lord’s return in [ Chapter 5 ] but now turns to another question that the Thessalonians had raised—the timing. Paul dismisses the need for speculation. Instead, he urges believers to be alert and self-controlled as they live in expectation of the Day of the Lord. *
To accomplish this, we require three essential elements: faith, hope, and love. We must put on the armor of faith and love and the helmet of the hope of salvation (5:8). Without these, we have no protection in this world. With them, however, we can be confident in our deliverance from the coming tribulation before Christ’s millennial kingdom, since God has not destined us for wrath (1 Thessalonians 5:9). ^
5:11 Encourage one another. Paul adds, Build each other up. These theological truths are not intended solely for personal education but for the corporate edification of all. We stand, or we fall—together. ^
As in 1 Thessalonians 4:15-18, what are we supposed to do with all of this information about the end times? Well, Paul’s point is not just to teach eschatology or give us details about the rapture. Paul wants us to encourage one another with these words. As we saw earlier (3:2), we are to walk alongside other believers and encourage them, just as the Holy Spirit does. We are called to comfort others when they are hurting, just as we expect them to comfort us in return. ^
