James 5:16
Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.

Application:

Suffering and sickness do not necessarily result from sin. Job, for instance, was afflicted though he didn’t sin (Job 1). Moreover, Jesus clarified that a person can be stricken with an illness or condition unrelated to wrongdoing (John 9:1-3). Conversely, a sinful lifestyle can result in weakness and suffering. Therefore, if needed, confess your trespasses to one another, especially a spiritually mature believer (5:16). If you deal with your sin, you will see God work in your life.

God will do extraordinary things with an ordinary person who is righteous (walks with him by faith) and makes energized prayer (5:16). Elijah not only prayed earnestly but also persistently (see 1 Kgs 18:42-44), and God worked miraculously in response (5:17-18). Elijah was a human being like us (5:17), yet he knew he had a God who is sovereign and expects his people to pray to him. Do you? 

When righteous believers pray passionately, biblically, and persistently, they, like Elijah, can look with expectation for divine reversals in their earthly circumstances.

Praying for one another also means carrying each other’s burdens as in Galatians 6:1-2.

Restoring a sinning brother or sister exemplifies carrying one another’s burdens. However, burdens don’t solely imply sin. Life’s burdens can encompass significant physical, relational, financial, and emotional challenges. Believers are called to support one another like spotters assist those lifting weights. Carrying another’s burden can take countless forms, including prayer, making time for someone, providing practical help, offering financial support, and being a listening ear. Such burden-bearing fulfills the law of Christ, the law of love (5:13-14; see John 13:34).
