Romans 14:11
For it is written:
“As I live, says the Lord,
Every knee shall bow to Me,
And every tongue shall confess to God.”
Application:
The more we police others’ behavior, the more dangerous our position becomes. Jesus said it is foolish to point out a speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye if you have a two-by-four (see Matt 7:3). Paul conveys the same idea: Why do you judge your brother or sister (14:10), when you know that each of us will give an account of himself to God (14:12)?
The judgment seat of Christ (4:10) is a comprehensive evaluation of our lives on earth, encompassing even amoral activities. God won’t ask you about your brother’s opinions and preferences; He’ll examine your account instead. So don’t worry so much about your neighbor; focus on yourself. Stay out of his business and tend to your own.
Just because our focus is on pleasing God doesn’t mean we aren’t thinking of others at all. Instead of judging one another, we decide never to put a stumbling block or pitfall in their way. We think of others all the time, but our first question is not, “What faults can I find in their lives?” Instead, it is, “How will my actions affect them?” Yes, you are free to enjoy what God gives you the freedom to enjoy. But don’t use that freedom to hurt others. Don’t flaunt it.
