1 John 4:18
There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.
Application:
The Son of God is the Savior of the world (4:14). If you have trusted in him, he has delivered you from sin, Satan, and death.
But he wants to use you to share that saving love with others. Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God participates with God in his delivering activity (4:15). The one who remains in love remains in God (4:16). Remember, to “remain” is to “hang out” (see 2:6). Hang out with love—seek out opportunities to express God’s definition of love (see 4:9–10)—and God will hang out with you. Living in the atmosphere of love means living in the atmosphere of God.
When love is made complete in you in this way, you can have confidence on the day of judgment (4:17).
Every believer will stand before the judgment seat of Christ. Don’t think of it as a trial to determine your salvation, but as the Judge’s opportunity to evaluate the Christian life you lived (see 2 Cor 5:10). Despite your sins and failures, if you actively sought to minister in love to members of God’s family, you will be able to stand with confidence on that day because “love covers a multitude of” offenses (1 Pet 4:8). You will have no reason to fear. Mature, perfect love drives out fear (4:18). Our capacity for love is possible only because he first loved us (4:19).
