1 Corinthians 2:9
But as it is written:
“Eye has not seen, nor ear heard,
Nor have entered into the heart of man
The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”
Application:
Spiritual wisdom is made possible by God’s personalized work in our lives. Quoting the prophet Isaiah, Paul explains that God can make known things that no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no human heart has conceived (2:9).
This is not a reference to heaven but to God’s work in the life of the believer. It indicates that God can help believers understand things they cannot learn through natural means. How does he do this? He reveals these things to us by the Spirit (2:10). This is called illumination.
Although God has revealed his inspired, written Word to us, believers need illumination to gain understanding. This is the work of the Holy Spirit, through the Word of God, within the mind of a Christian, causing him to learn, understand, and apply the things of God supernaturally.
It is the voice of God through the Word, made personal to you by the Holy Spirit. Illumination does not involve new revelation; rather, it involves God giving a believer understanding of the meaning and application of Scripture in the midst of his own experiences.
