Shining Lights in a Dark World

by Ricardo

Philippians 2:14-16
Do all things without complaining and disputing, that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast the word of life, so that I may rejoice in the day of Christ that I have not run in vain or labored in vain.

Application:

Practically speaking, they were to do everything without grumbling or arguing. Grumbling refers to any negative emotional response to something you don’t like. We all know what arguing is. Both hinder obedience. If we want to see God at work, we shouldn’t waste our time grumbling or arguing about his will.

Why is this point important? Paul clearly tells us the reason: it’s so that you may be blameless and pure, children of God who are faultless in a crooked and perverted generation, among whom you shine like stars in the world (2:15).

God takes us through a developmental process so that even when the world around us is dark, we are light. He’s not telling us to become light. Rather, if God is in us, we are light. We’re to be unhindered light, shining forth. When we are, it becomes clear that we’re different from the world around us. So how do we shine? By holding firm to the word of life (2:16), we reflect God’s perspective to a watching world when we hold tight to his Word through trust and obedience.
