Luke 2:6-7
So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
Application:
As a result of the emperor’s decree, everyone traveled to his town to be registered (2:3). Since Joseph was of the house and family line of David, he had to travel from his home in Nazareth to Bethlehem (2:4), David’s hometown (see 1 Sam 16:1). The distance between the two places was about ninety miles.
Mary traveled with him, and while they were in Bethlehem, she gave birth to Jesus (2:5–7) in fulfillment of Micah 5:2. Given the number of travelers, there was no guest room available for them, so she laid her baby in a manger, a feeding trough for animals (3:7). The King of creation, who deserved all honor and glory, had been born into the humblest of circumstances.
A manger was a place where they fed and kept the animals at night, possibly a barn near or attached to a house. This place would be dirty and smell horrible. There was no room at the inn because everyone born in Bethlehem had to report for the census. It is here that the shepherds will visit and bring honor to baby Jesus (Luke 2:8-16), not the Wise Men. They will come years later and bring gifts to the “child” Jesus (Matthew 2:9).*
