Jesus, Son of the Most High God

Luke 1:30-33
Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.”

Application:

The angelic visitor told Mary that she would conceive and give birth to a son, whom she was to name Jesus (1:31). The name Jesus is the Greek form of the Hebrew name Joshua, meaning “the Lord saves.” He would be no ordinary child; he would be called the Son of the Most High, resembling his Father and sharing in the divine nature. God would grant him the throne of his father David, giving him an earthly rule, and he would reign forever in his kingdom (1:32–33). Thus, Jesus would fulfill the Old Testament promises of the coming Son of David, the Messiah, who would reign eternally (see 2 Sam 7:12–16).

Mary was understandably shocked. As a virgin, she asked, “How can this be?” (1:34). The child would be conceived by the Holy Spirit, meaning that Jesus would embody both divine and human nature—He is the God-Man. Theologians refer to this as the hypostatic union, the perfect union of divine and human natures in one person. The term “hypostatic” comes from the Greek word “hypostasis,” which means “being” or “person,” signifying the union of two natures in one being—God in the flesh. Therefore, He would be called the Son of God (1:35).

Mary’s relative Elizabeth conceived a son in her old age (1:36). This was possible because nothing is impossible for God (1:37). Although Mary didn’t understand all the implications this would have for her life, she humbly accepted God’s will, saying, “I am the Lord’s servant” (1:38).
