Psalm 116:1-2
I love the Lord, because He has heard
My voice and my supplications.
Because He has inclined His ear to me,
Therefore I will call upon Him as long as I live.
Application:
These opening verses establish the psalmist’s foundational faith in God’s attentiveness to those in need.1 The passage moves from gratitude for past deliverance to a commitment for the future: the psalmist had appealed to God during a time of great need, and God heard and answered his prayer2, which now motivates his love and devotion.
Unlike idols with ears that cannot hear, the Lord actually attended to the psalmist’s prayer.2 This responsiveness becomes the foundation for ongoing trust. The psalmist’s past experience teaches him to depend on God for the future, prompting his resolve to continue calling out to the Lord throughout his life.2 Rather than beginning with a silent, distant God—as do other psalms—this one opens with the assurance that God has been loving and caring all along.1
The language carries weight: the phrase “my voice, my supplication” implies a loud, persistent supplication1, suggesting the psalmist’s prayers were earnest and sustained. The commitment to “call” on God represents an implicit expression of trust, with the psalmist pledging to depend on God for the rest of his life because God has already proven faithful.3
These verses anchor the entire psalm’s movement from crisis to thanksgiving. Psalm 116 is a thanksgiving psalm in which the psalmist reflects on a time when God helped him and responds with gratitude and loyalty.3 The opening declaration of love is not sentimental but rooted in concrete experience—God heard, God responded, and that transforms everything that follows.
