Psalm 91:1
He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High
Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

Application: 

The psalmist expresses the great confidence he has in the security that comes from dwelling in the shadow of the Almighty. With him, there is abiding protection (91:1). Just like a bird takes refuge under the wings of its parent, the believer who lives under the cover of God’s covenant finds safety (91:4).*

91:5-8 God covers his own with his faithfulness 24/7, thus providing them with a shield of protection. Knowledge of this should produce confident trust in God, despite the threats and attacks of the wicked (91:5). Regardless of the dangers around them, those who experience the covering that God provides will be cared for and, ultimately, will see the punishment of the wicked (91:7-8).*

The word “Abide” in Hebrew means to stay the night, get comfortable, and feel at home. It paints the picture that when we seek God with all our heart, obey His word, give Him thanks, and praise His Holy Name, He places us under His care, and we will be under His protection. This verse contains two of God’s Holy names, “El Elyon,” The most high God, and “El Shaddai,” the Almighty God.
