Ephesians 1:7
In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace
Application:
If a man cannot redeem himself from being a bond-servant, his kinsman might redeem him (Leviticus 25:48). Thus, antitypically, the Son of God became the Son of Man, so that as our kinsman, He might redeem us (Mt 20:28). Another “redemption” follows, namely, that of the “ purchased possession” hereafter (Eph 1:14).^
In the ancient world, slaves could be redeemed; a price could be paid for their freedom. From birth, every human being becomes subject to sin, enslaved by lustful passions and desires (Ephesians 2:1-3).
Redemption from sin comes through the price that Jesus Christ paid with his blood (1:7).*
Why blood? Because the judgment for sin is death (Rom 6:23), and shedding blood signifies taking life (see Deut 12:23). The sinless Son of God had to die to atone for our sins so that we might have forgiveness (Eph 1:7)—God’s grace richly poured out on us (1:8).*
This “remission,” as an explanation of “redemption,” encompasses not only deliverance from sin’s penalty but also freedom from its pollution and enslaving power, as well as the reconciliation with an offended God and the satisfaction owed to a just God positively.^
Because of Jesus’ redemption, I am saved from sin’s penalties (Justified) (Romans 8:1); I am being actively saved from sin’s power (Sanctified) (Galatians 5:16-23, Ephesians 5:26); and I will be saved from sin’s presence (Glorified) (1 Corinthians 15:50-57).
