Joshua 1:9
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

Application:

In the first chapter of the book of Joshua, the Lord commands him to be courageous three times. Joshua is now succeeding Moses, and Israel is poised to cross into the Promised Land.

Courage is the willingness to take action even when facing fear, doubt, or uncertainty. Joshua should not depend only on preparation or his skills, but also on God’s proven strength and his own choice to confront challenges, risks, or discomfort directly. The Lord assures Joshua that He will be with him, just as He was with Moses. The Lord will stay with us and grant us victory in our battles when we walk in obedience to His Word.

The Lord commands Joshua to observe carefully the whole instruction my servant Moses commanded you … so that you will have success wherever you go (Joshua 1:7).*

For Israel, success meant receiving their inheritance. To do this, they had to stay closely connected to God’s Word. Ultimately, success for a Christian is not defined by popularity, power, prosperity, or position. Success involves fulfilling your God-given purpose in life.

To achieve this, we (like Israel) must meditate on Scripture and closely observe all that is written in it (1:7–8).*

To meditate on something is to contemplate it repeatedly in much the same way a cow chews its cud. When you do this, the Word of God is embedded deeply into your soul, allowing your actions to be guided by God’s perspective rather than by your feelings or cultural opinions.*
