Psalm 73:25-26
Whom have I in heaven but You?
And there is none upon earth that I desire besides You.
My flesh and my heart fail;
But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
Application:
Not only did Asaph experience God’s presence, but he also received His guidance; his counsel.*
God’s Word directs us to believe what is true and to live wisely. Then, when this life is over, although the wicked are “swept away by terrors” (Psalm 73:19), God will elevate the righteous in glory (73:24).*
When Asaph’s perspective shifts to align with this reality, he realizes that he desires nothing but God (73:25). He acknowledges that the Lord is everything to him. And, despite the temporary pleasures the wicked enjoy in this life, Asaph has God as his portion forever (73:26).*
Jesus asked in Luke 9:25, “For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and is himself destroyed or lost?”2
When we make Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior and obey Him, we, like Paul in Philippians 3:8, will consider all earthly pleasures, material things, and ungodly gains rubbish or garbage so that we may gain Jesus Christ, the Author and Finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:2).
