1 Peter 2:2-3
as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby, if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
Application:
Although this new life is imperishable, it requires growth. Our sinful self-centeredness will continue to dominate if we let it, unless the seed of spiritual life is nourished. How can we ensure maturity? To stay physically healthy, we must feed our bodies with nutritious food while avoiding unhealthy options. The same principle holds true in the spiritual realm.
Therefore, Peter advises us to eliminate all malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander (2:1). These behaviors are part of our former life of sin, which leads to death (i.e., separation from fellowship with God). Using the metaphor of new life (“born again,” “seed” 1:23), he encourages them to be like newborn infants and crave the pure milk of the Word so they may grow in salvation (2:2). The Word that gave us new life is the same Word that promotes growth (2:2). Unfortunately, many Christians, however, choose to remain malnourished.
You don’t have to tell babies to eat; they know when they’re hungry. Christians should remember that they are spiritually hungry and need nourishment. You also won’t see infants eating large meals on Sunday to last all week. Babies eat regularly for daily sustenance; Christians need the same.
Some believers consume spiritual junk food that is unnutritious and will not lead to growth. They need a consistent diet and the application of God’s Word instead of man’s opinion. Once we taste that the Lord is good (2:3), we’ll realize nothing else will satisfy us.
