Colossians 3:12
Character of the New Man
Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering;
Application:
The Colossians and all born-again Christians are called to clothe themselves in accordance with the new man they are in Christ (3:11). Paul identifies five characteristics of the heart that they should uphold. Similar to his list in 3:8, some are internal attitudes, while others are external.
Paul grounds his call for these characteristics in the nature of believers, who hold a special place with God. He explains that the Lord has chosen them and set them apart. As holy and cherished individuals, they should embrace a lifestyle that aligns with their new nature.
One way we manifest the characteristics of the new self is by forgiving one another (3:13).*
Some believers harbor unforgiveness, which results in perpetual anger and bitterness. As far as they’re concerned, offenses committed against them linger like unpaid bills, demanding payment. However, they forget that our vertical relationship with God is linked with our horizontal relationships with one another.*
What makes forgiveness possible is recognizing that the Lord has forgiven you (3:13).*
