Romans 8:28
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.
Application:
Many people enjoy the first part of Romans 8:28, which states that God works in all things for the good of those who love Him. However, most individuals overlook the second part, which is even more important. God is actively working in our lives for our benefit, but not so we’ll live a life of ease. Instead, He works for our good according to His purpose.*
So, what is God’s purpose for our lives? God wants to shape us into the image of his Son (Romans 8:29). He aims to make us like Christ, reflecting his character and behavior.*
Sure, he desires to give us “all things,” but we can only receive them if we are conformed to Christ. Therefore, the promise in Romans 8:28 is conditional. If believers do not love God and progressively become “conformed to the image of” Christ, they will not witness all things working together for good. Unfortunately, not all Christians consistently remain in God’s love (see Jude 21).*
We remain in God’s love by obeying Jesus Christ, by being doers of the Word, not just hearers (James 1:22-25). Jesus set the example for us and was obedient to the Father (John 15:9-12). We also meditate on His Word day and night (Psalm 1:1-3) like a cow chews the cud.
