In this blog edition, I am reflecting on a song by King and Country, Fix My Eyes, click HERE to see the video.
…Love like I’m not scared, give when it’s not fair, live life for another, take time for a brother. Fight for the weak ones, speak out for freedom, find faith in the battle, stand tall but above it all. Fix my eyes on You, On You…
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Our eyes are the window that connects our souls to our world. What a wonderful gift God has given us, one we take for granted daily. We experience the beauty God has created with them and stand in awe of His marvelous creation.
The heavens declare the glory of God;
And the firmament shows His handiwork.
Day unto day utters speech,
And night unto night reveals knowledge.
Psalm 19:1-2
It is a beautiful gift, but like a regular window, it can be abused and/or used for purposes not intended by the Creator. According to the Holy Bible, every child of God has three enemies. The Flesh, the world, and the devil. In the book of 1 John, we read about two enemies, the Flesh and the World
For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world.
1 John 2:16
In 2 Corinthians, we read about the devil, who is blinding God’s creation:
whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them.
2 Corinthians 4:4
In the Garden of Eden, the devil approached Eve, who was sinless and innocent up to that time and tempted her. The devil contradicted God’s command that Eve should not eat of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil or she would die. That is why he is called the devil, which translates into LIAR, DECEIVER:
Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate…
Genesis 3:4-6
Satan attacked the innocent Eve with our other two enemies:
She finally saw the fruit was good for food and pleasing to the eyes.
(Lust of the flesh)
It is also desirable for gaining wisdom.
(Pride of Life, which includes a good standing among mankind, worldly pride)
Are we Christians in danger of these attacks?
Yes, daily, every breathing minute. The devil wants us to take our eyes off Christ and focus on temporal things that are passing away and do not please God (1 John 2:17).
The apostle Peter warned the believers to be alert and guard against this enemy:
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.
1 Peter 5:8
The Lord Jesus also explained the devil will test the believer:
And the Lord said, “Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren.”
Luke 22:31-32
After listening to the above-mentioned song, what do we Fix Our Eyes on?
We will never say we fix our eyes on the devil and what he stands for. But do we sit in front of the TV and watch material that pollutes our minds? The world’s philosophy is contrary to God; it is enmity with God (James 4:4). What we watch on TV reflects this. We then go and live out or promote these images and these fantasies and even pursue them. We find pleasure in feeding the desires of the flesh. Some pursue dishonest ways in order to become famous so others can see what we have become (lust of the flesh, pride of life.)
Brothers, do we look at other women with lust in our eyes?
Sisters, do you envy and want to be like that glamorous woman you see on TV?
When we let the lust of our eyes, the lust of our flesh, and the pride of life get between us and our God, we grieve the Holy Spirit, and hurt those who love us most. We should be mindful of this and resist, focus on better things, and put the kingdom of God first.
The apostle Paul wrote about what we should focus on:
Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things. The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.
Philippians 4:8-9
And finally, the book of Hebrews tells us WHO to Fix Our Eyes on:
…let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Hebrews 12:1-3
Abba, Father,
Forgive us when we fix our eyes on anything other than Jesus. Give us strength to resist the devil, the flesh, and the fallen world system. We place all our TRUST in the Holy Spirit to guide us and convict us when we stray from the path of righteousness. Let our walk be for Your Glory.
In Jesus’ name, Amen!
