Psalm 139:23-24
Search me, O God, and know my heart;
Try me, and know my anxieties;
And see if there is any wicked way in me,
And lead me in the way everlasting.
Application:
David concludes the Psalm by acknowledging his flawed motives. However, he also knows that God understands his heart completely. Therefore, he asks God to search and test him, revealing any offensive and unrighteous thoughts and intentions (139:23–24).*
Like David, we do not fully know ourselves. Let us pray that God’s Spirit would help us understand ourselves properly so that we can repent where necessary and enjoy intimate fellowship with him as he leads us in the everlasting way. In Psalm 143:10, David asks God to teach him to do His will, to lead him in the land of unrighteousness.*
Today, when we ask God to speak to and guide us, He directs us to His written Word. The writer of Hebrews 4:12 explained why:
For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
Jesus Christ is the Good Shepherd (John 10:11), leading us along the path of righteousness for His name’s sake when we receive Him as our Lord and Savior and obey Him (Psalm 23:1-4).
