Isaiah 53:3-4
He was despised and rejected by mankind,
a man of suffering, and familiar with pain.
Like one from whom people hide their faces
he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.
Surely he took up our pain
and bore our suffering,
yet we considered him punished by God,
stricken by him, and afflicted.

Application:

The greatest sin of Israel’s leaders and people was their failure to recognize their Messiah upon his arrival. A few people in Israel believed (53:1). Most Jews during Jesus’s time, however, did not regard him as significant. There was nothing remarkable about Jesus’s physical appearance (53:2). He was despised and rejected. People turned away from him during his suffering (53:3).*

These verses couldn’t depict more clearly what Jesus Christ endured. The language is precise regarding the kind of death he would die: he was pierced (53:5). However, God also clearly communicates through Isaiah the reason that the Servant-Messiah would die: because of our rebellion … because of our iniquities … the Lord … punished him for the iniquity of us all (53:5–6).* 

Hundreds of years before it happened, the prophet testified to Christ’s substitutionary atonement on the cross.*

In Exodus 12, the blood of a lamb on the doorpost kept the angel of death away. Here, Jesus Christ is prophesied to be our Lamb who takes away our sin (John 1:29). He removed our sins, and God placed them on Jesus at the cross, where our sin was punished once and for all (Hebrews 10:10, 2 Corinthians 5:21). The blood of Christ now cleanses us from sin as we walk in the light (1 John 1:7).
