Confession, To Agree and Repent

1 John 1:9
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Application:

If we deny that sin exists in our lives, we’re deceiving ourselves (1:8) because we’re certainly not fooling anyone else. Even on our best days, we fall far short of God’s holy standard. However, if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us (1:9). Why?*

When we confess our sins to God, we acknowledge what God’s Word reveals about us. We admit that what the light exposes is not merely a mistake, a bad habit, or just a product of our upbringing.*

It is sin.*

This allows the power of forgiveness and cleansing to flow. The confession of sin executes the verdict of forgiveness that Jesus secured on the cross. To deny we sin is to call God a liar and forfeit the hope of His word doing its transforming work in your life (1:10).*

When we receive Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior and obey Him, the Holy Spirit empowers us to forsake our sins (Isaiah 55:7, Ephesians 4:22, 1 Peter 2:11, Hebrews 12:1) and to love God more than we love our sins (Luke 10:27). This does not mean we stop sinning completely; instead sinning is no longer a way of life for us; we are a new creation born again of the Spirit (John 3).
