Humble Servants

by Ricardo

Mark 9:35
And He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, “If anyone desires to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all.”

Application:

Upon their arrival in Capernaum on the north side of the Sea of Galilee, Jesus asked his disciples to explain the argument he had overheard while they were traveling (9:33). They hadn’t realized the Master had been listening, so they all fell silent. They were ashamed to admit they’d been arguing about who was the greatest (9:34).

It’s interesting to note Jesus’s response. He didn’t rebuke them for wanting to be great; rather, he corrected them about how to become great. Greatness comes by serving others—not by exalting oneself above others. You must believe that God will honor your servanthood in history and in eternity.

Jesus illustrated his point with a child (9:36). Showing kindness to a child—who can offer nothing in return—is to serve God (9:37). Greatness is not achieved through marvelous actions that everyone sees. It’s often achieved through lowly, unseen acts of service toward those who cannot repay. But God sees, and God repays.
