The Golden Rule

by Ricardo

Matthew 7:12
Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.

Application:

In the context of discussing judging others and prayer, Jesus articulates the boomerang principle: “Whatever you want others to do for you, do the same for them.” We call this the Golden Rule. In short, it means loving others: practicing the “one anothers” of Scripture (e.g., John 15:12; Gal 6:2; Eph 4:32; 1 Thess 5:11). Do for the people around you what you want God to do for you, and watch how he delivers.

As in Luke 6:27–38, Jesus distinguished his disciples from those who did not heed his words. Christ’s followers will have different values and thus be distinguishable from the rest of the world. They will love their enemies, do good to those who hate them, and pray for those who mistreat them (6:27–28). They will respond with blessing and generosity rather than cursing and retaliation (6:29–30). They will demonstrate love to those who do not love them (6:31–35) in order to bring such detractors to the knowledge of God’s love in Jesus Christ. Those who treat people this way will reflect the love and mercy of their Father in heaven (6:35–36).
