Praise for the Lord’s Mercies

by Ricardo

Psalm 103:1-2
A Psalm of David.
Bless the Lord, O my soul;
And all that is within me, bless His holy name!
Bless the Lord, O my soul,
And forget not all His benefits:

Application:

With all that is within [him], David exhorts his soul to bless the Lord (103:1). He then does so again (103:2). He wants to express praise and thanksgiving to God for all he has done—both for David personally and for his people corporately. Such benefits from God must not be forgotten or taken for granted (103:2).

The benefits God provides, as David highlights, include spiritual and physical blessings such as forgiving iniquity, healing diseases, and demonstrating his faithful love and compassion (103:3–4). For those who are weary, he provides renewed vitality (103:5). There are countless reasons to praise God and express our gratitude to him. Yet sinful humans are prone to forget to do so, so we must continually bring God’s benefits to our minds.

When we forget God, we slip into disobedience and doubt, and our prayers bounce off the ceiling. We wonder why God is not answering our prayers. We wonder why God is not healing our diseases. The same God of the Old Testament, the one who healed then, is still the same God who heals today, forgiving our iniquities in Jesus Christ our Lord, healing our diseases by the stripes of Jesus Christ, and renewing our youth as the eagle. He still does this if we walk with Him, honor His Word, obey Him, believe in what He promised, and make Him the Lord of our lives. Basically, we need to revere Him, take Him seriously, put away our idols, worship and praise Him throughout the day, not just one hour on Sunday.*
