Matthew 1:20-21
But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”
Application:
In biblical times, marriage in the Orient involved several stages. The betrothal or engagement period was quite different from modern engagements. The engagement between Joseph and Mary was a legal contract that was as binding as marriage. Therefore, when Joseph found out that Mary was pregnant, he decided to divorce her quietly. Being a righteous man, he believed she had committed adultery but did not want to publicly disgrace her (1:19).
Before Joseph could execute his plans, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. Angels are divine messengers, and one way they fulfill their role in Scripture is by faithfully delivering God’s messages to humans. The angel told Joseph to take Mary as his wife because the child conceived in her was from the Holy Spirit.
God has established laws, such as the law of gravity, that govern the universe. When He intervenes in the natural course of events, disrupts those laws, and shows His power over creation, a miracle occurs. The birth of Jesus is the most unique in history because Mary had never been with a man. A virgin gave birth miraculously through the work of the Holy Spirit.
This miracle was truly extraordinary because it involved more than just the birth of any baby. The greatest miracle in human history occurred when God became man. The eternal Son of God took on human flesh, uniting full divinity and full humanity in one person. Jesus Christ is the God-man.
