Luke 1:26-28
Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. And having come in, the angel said to her, “Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!”
Application:
When Elizabeth was six months pregnant, the angel Gabriel made another visit. This time, he went to the town of Nazareth in Galilee and appeared to a virgin named Mary, who was engaged to Joseph, a man descended from King David (1:26–27). Gabriel conveyed the Lord’s favor to Mary, but she was deeply troubled (1:28–30). She wondered why a heavenly being would come to see her.
The visitor told Mary that she would conceive and give birth to a son, whom she was to name Jesus (1:31). The name Jesus is the Greek form of the Hebrew name Joshua, meaning “the Lord saves.” He would not be an ordinary child. He would be called the Son of the Most High, embodying the divine nature of his Father. God would grant him the throne of his ancestor David, which represents an earthly rule, and he would reign forever in his kingdom (1:32–33). Thus, Jesus would fulfill the Old Testament promises of the coming Messiah, the Son of David, who would rule eternally (see 2 Sam 7:12–16).
Mary was understandably shocked. As a virgin, she asked, “How can this be?” (1:34). The child would be conceived by the Holy Spirit, meaning that Jesus would be both divine and human—the God-Man. Theologians refer to this as the hypostatic union, the perfect union of divine and human natures in one person. The term “hypostatic” comes from the Greek word *hypostasis*, meaning “being” or “person.” This union involves two natures existing in one being—God in the flesh. Therefore, he would be called the Son of God (1:35).
