John 6:35
And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.
Application:
The crowds wanted to know what work God required of them (6:28). So Jesus clarified: This is the work of God—that you believe in the one he has sent (6:29). The only thing God demands of those wanting to receive the free gift of eternal life is belief in his Son, Jesus Christ.
That wasn’t enough for them. If they were to believe in him, they wanted to see what sign he would perform (6:30). They pointed to the Old Testament miracle of Moses providing Israel with manna—bread from heaven—in the wilderness (6:31). But Jesus corrected them. Moses hadn’t given them any bread. God was their source, not Moses (6:32).
In fact, God was offering them something greater than just bread. He offered them true bread—the one who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world (6:32–33). But the crowd was still focused on food. Give us this bread always, they said (6:34), which could as well have been a cry of, “We’re hungry!” So, once again, Jesus made himself clear: I am the bread of life … No one who comes to me will ever be hungry, and no one who believes in me will ever be thirsty again (6:35). That’s Jesus’s way of describing the gift of eternal life.
We must see Jesus as our source of life. If we “feed” on him (meaning “believe in” him, 6:29) as the bread of God (6:33), we will never go hungry again (that is, we “will never die,” 11:26). This eternal life is lasting, secure, and unchangeable.
