1 Timothy 2:1-2
Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence.
Application:
The Greek word used here, deēsis, meaning ‘supplications’ or ‘petition,’ refers to requests made out of urgency or necessity. Sometimes, these requests are made on behalf of others as a form of intercession (see Luke 22:32; Acts 8:24). Believers show their dependence on God and love for others through intercession. Intercession also allows believers to demonstrate their unity.*
Here, Paul begins the core of his letter. Right at the top of the list is the topic of prayer. He wants petitions, intercessions, and thanksgivings to be made by the church for everyone (2:1). In other words, we should pray in all kinds of ways for all kinds of people. But he especially asks for prayers for kings and all those in authority. Why? So that we may lead a quiet and peaceful life in all godliness and dignity (2:2).^
Paul encourages Timothy and the Ephesian church to pray for secular leaders so they will govern effectively and create a peaceful environment that allows Christians the freedom to follow the true King’s agenda. God expects us to submit to His rule regardless of the political climate we live in, but in a culture of religious freedom, believers can have a more public witness and share their faith in ways they couldn’t under oppressive regimes. An orderly, free society creates a positive environment for spreading the gospel.^

Disclaimer
When God inspires me, I write blogs. Consider this writing as a Bible study. Like the Bereans in Acts 17:11, search the Scriptures to determine whether what I write is so. Always consult with your church ministers about biblical matters. I am also not a professional writer, so some grammar or spelling errors may be present. I try my best to write as efficiently as possible. Your brother in Christ, Ricardo
