Spiritual Milk

1 Peter 2:2-3
as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby, if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.

Application:

Although this new life is imperishable, it requires growth. Our sinful self-centeredness will continue to rule if we let it unless the seed of spiritual life is nourished.

How can we ensure maturity? To be physically healthy, we must nourish our bodies with nutritious food while avoiding unhealthy food. The same principle applies in the spiritual realm.

Therefore, Peter advises us to rid ourselves of all malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander (2:1). Such behaviors are part of our former life of sin, which leads to death (i.e., separation from fellowship with God).

Returning to the metaphor of new life (“born again,” “seed” 1:23), he urges them to be like newborn infants and crave the pure milk of the Word so they may grow in salvation (2:2). The Word that brought us to new life is the same Word that fosters growth (2:2). However, many Christians unfortunately opt for malnourishment.

You don’t have to command babies to eat; they know when they’re hungry. Christians must remember that they are spiritually hungry and need to be fed. You also won’t find infants consuming large meals on Sunday to last them the whole week. Babies eat regularly for daily nourishment; Christians require the same.

Some believers consume spiritual junk food that is unnourishing and will not produce growth. They need a steady diet and the application of God’s Word instead of man’s opinion. Once we taste that the Lord is good (2:3), we’ll know nothing else will satisfy us.

When God inspires me, I write blogs. Consider this writing as a Bible study. Like the Bereans in Acts 17:11, search the Scriptures to determine whether what I write is so. Always consult with your church ministers about biblical matters. I am also not a professional writer, so some grammar or spelling errors may be present. I try my best to write as efficiently as possible. Your brother in Christ, Ricardo
