Horizontal Relationships

Romans 13:9-10
For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not bear false witness,” “You shall not covet,” and if there is any other commandment, are all summed up in this saying, namely, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.

Application:

All our debts should be repaid. Well, all but one: the debt that can never be fully paid is our debt to love one another (13:8).

As Paul illustrates in chapter 12, Biblical love is compassionately and righteously seeking the benefit and well-being of others.

We owe this to others endlessly because this kind of love is the fundamental principle behind all of God’s horizontal commandments: Do not commit adultery, do not murder, do not steal, and do not covet (13:9).

This is why Paul, once more echoing Jesus, refers to the command to love your neighbor as yourself as the fulfillment of the law (13:9–10).

Jesus expressed that “all the Law and the Prophets depend” on two commands: (1) Love God with all your heart, soul, and mind; (2) love your neighbor as yourself (Matt 22:37–40).

A born-again Christian does not view the Ten Commandments as choices or optional rules, as one might in a social club; instead, we see them as essential commands to follow to uphold our vertical relationship with God and our horizontal relationships with fellow believers.

When God inspires me, I write blogs. Consider this writing as a Bible study. Like the Bereans In Acts 17:11, search the Scriptures to determine whether what I write is so. Always consult with your church ministers about biblical matters. I am also not a professional writer, so some grammar or spelling errors may be. I try my best to write as efficiently as possible.
