God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

Application:

The devil takes advantage of ignorance regarding the Word of God to mislead the lost, creating chaos and confusion that leads to doubts about God’s promises and His sovereignty. These doubts create a vacuum for truth, resulting in the rise of religions intended to rationalize our existence. Are Catholics correct? Are Baptists correct? What about Islam?

In this chapter of John, the Samaritan woman at the well asks Jesus whether Jerusalem is the right place to worship or if Samaria is. It’s like asking Jesus, “Are the Jews right, or are we?” The Jews had no dealings with Samaria; the two cultures had a significant divide.

Jesus explains that the “truth” transcends race and culture and that God does not reside in a physical building because He is Spirit (Acts 17:48). 

“Worshiping the Father in Spirit” means nurturing a heart that desires a close spiritual relationship with the God who is Spirit. Worshiping God “in truth” means honoring Him in a biblically accurate way—through the one who embodies truth, Jesus Christ our Lord (John 14:6). God seeks those who will worship Him spiritually through Jesus Christ, grounded in the truth of His Word as revealed to us by the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 2:6-16).

Let us learn to trust our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and to keep His commandments.
